During the Lima Conference, Rae McGrath (spokesperson for the Handicap International network on submunition bombs) proposed a very particular demonstration...
The room is full of people and Rae is supposed to explain the problem represented by submunition bombs. Since the best way to teach is by example, Rae calls on the audience.
“Everyone wearing glasses, stand up!”
Some thirty persons stand up here and there: members of parliament, militants, journalists... They are all wearing glasses, of course, and hear Rae say:
“You are soldiers and my enemies and I must eliminate you! Please be seated.”
Rae begins a long monolog to explain his attack strategy: it must be controlled, calculated, in conformity with the policy of his commanding officers and humanitarian rights and take into consideration the disparity of enemies mixed in with the others (those without glasses) over the entire site.
Because of this strategy, he obtains the right to use the appropriate arm to eliminate them...even at the price of some collateral damage, preferably very limited.
Attack!
Rae, who turns his back, takes handfuls of tea bags from his pockets and throws them wildly at the audience, who are surprised and disconcerted. After a curious moment of silence, victims manifest themselves here and there, those wearing glasses...and, of course, those without.
The demonstration is so clear and unexpected that the audience understands without difficulty the absurdity of these weapons and their consequences...
